Week 4 Project Action Plan: Female Identity

I decided to do my Literary Analysis Project on a female character from at least two different texts. Two of the texts I have decided on are on, "About the House Girl" and "The Luck of Roaring Camp. The two character I will focus on are Ifapi and Cherokee Sal. I will discuss how the author of each of these stories feels about the character. I will discuss how two other characters from each story feels about the character. I will discuss how I feel about the character from each story. I will also discuss how each character feels about herself.

I will discuss the following Literary devices:

Characterization:
I will discuss the personalities of Ifapi and Cherokee Sal. For example, Ifapi is a shy girl and did not let herself be seen by the men who would visit her dad's house.

Protagonist:
Ifapi and Cherokee are the protagonist of their story, since they are both focused on.

Epithet:
Cherokee Sal is a sinful woman, she was a coarse (improper).
Ifapi: "...she was a shy girl who hid herself when young men came to the house." (Karok, 40).
"...he saw Ifapi covered with a heavy blanket..." (Karok, 45).

Tone:
I will do more research on finding different texts from these two stories that describe the tone. This will help me discover the author's view of the character.

Point of View:
I can discuss Patapir's point of view on Ifapi. For example, "Patapir continued to thin about her, wondering what she was like, wishing he might have a glimpse of her."(Karok, 41). In this quote it shows that Patapir does not know much about Ifapi. She is a mystery to him, and he wants to learn more about her.

I can discuss Sandy Tipton's view on Cherokee Sal. For example, "Sandy Tipton though it was 'rough on Sal'..."(Harte, 1). This shows that Sandy Tipton viewed Cherokee Sal as a human and he cared about her. So, he did not see her as all bad like the others.

Harte, "The Luck of Roaring Camp".

Karok, "About the House Girl", pgs. 40-50.

  1. Hi Laura! Thanks for your notes exploring your chosen topic a bit further.

The project prompt about how female characters are perceived reads like this:

"Choose a female character on whom to focus, and create a project that discusses some of the following questions:
What is the author’s attitude towards her? (how can you tell?)
What is your attitude towards her?
How do (at least 2) other characters view her?
How does she view herself? "

The prompt asks you to focus on a female character in ONE selection, not two. So your plan will need to change, accordingly.

This assignment asks you to do literary analysis. Literary analysis focuses on how plot/structure, character, setting, and many other techniques are used by the author to create meaning. In this case, you will be examining how one female character is presented in one selection, using some of the literary elements shown above.

You need to lead off your project with an arguable statement — something that someone who read the same reading could reasonably disagree with. What is your general argument going to be?

Make sure that, whenever you make any kind of claim (about a character, context, author, etc) that you use specific textual evidence from the reading to support your claim. So if you say a character is deceitful, for example, , then you will need to use a quote showing what you perceive to be deceit, and then discuss how the words you are choosing show deceit, rather than anything else. Your job is to persuade your reader that what you say is valid, based on the textual evidence you present.

I look forward to reading your project submission!

  2. Hi Laura, I really like how you chose the question with choosing a female character for your project. This was one of my choices when we had to pick three. I enjoyed both of these stories, but think you will have a lot more to write about if you choose Ifapi, the store give a lot of details about her, Charokee Sal is important because the story describes what the men think of her, but after the baby was born and she died, they didn't talk about her again.
I am looking forward to reading your project, I know it will be amazing. Good luck!
